Debate: Should children be able to choose how much screen time they get each day?

To introduce our new writing unit – Discussion writing – the children debated a controversial statement as part of their planning process for their first piece of writing. Splitting into groups of for and against, the children took turns to share and then counter their points of view in a confident and explicit way. It was fantastic to see children applying their oracy skills by using sentence stems such as: I disagree because and my point of view is…. because, as well as listening with care and attention to each speaker. The children collated the points of view from both groups, using these to form their for and against arguments when writing a discussion based on: Should children be able to choose how much screen time they get each day?

Amazing debating Mandela!
