Fraction Fun

Today in Year 3, we have been developing our understanding of fractions to compare different unit fractions. We started off by discussing the question: would you rather have a 1/2 of a pizza or a 1/4 of a pizza? Once discussed, we explored this by cutting a pizza. The children cut up a pizza into different fractions to understand which fraction was bigger. We found out that a 1/2 is bigger than 1/4.

We then explored a fraction wall to compare different unit fractions. The children used the fraction wall to answer a range of different questions.

We found out that in unit fractions, the bigger the denominator the smaller the fraction. So we would rather have a 1/3 of a cake instead of a 1/5 of a cake!
