Classification

Mandela Class started our new science unit today where we will be exploring the enquiry question: How can living things be classified and in what ways is classification useful? Today, the children learnt what classification meant and were introduced to some new vocabulary:

classification, subdivide, organism, taxonomy

The children then explored how to classify with packs of playing cards. Their challenge was to come up with different ways to classify the cards and then recording the number in each set. We managed to find over 5 different ways to classify the packs of cards including by colour, suit and odd or even. Following this, we learnt how scientists test to classify if something is a living thing through the MRS NERG acronym:

Movement

Reproduction

Sensitivity

Nutrition

Excretion

Respiration

Growth

We will be exploring this further over the next few lessons. Well done Mandela!
